The use of the BioProSim simulation allows the students to apply and verify their understanding of the fundamental
principles governing bioprocesses. These principles have been covered in the theoretical part and other practical sessions of
the course:
Physiology of organisms (growth constants of microbes (kS, µmax, mS, Ymax), ATP yield, fermentation pathway, yield
coefficient as function of growth rate, decay rate, oxygen affinity, oxygen uptake rate, specific oxygen uptake rate).
Oxygen mass transfer (oxygen transfer rates, kLa value, oxygen transfer efficiency, specific air flow rate, saturation deficit,
O2 solubility ).
Chemostat steady state principles (dependence of steady state values (S, X, D.O, P) on reactor running conditions and
microbial strain, productivity).
Chemostat theory (productivity, maximum productivity, critical dilution rate).
Stoichiometry of biological reactions (oxidation state of compounds, electron balance, oxygen demand, fermentation
balance).
Thermodynamics of reaction (DGfo, DGo, DGo', dependence of actual DG on running conditions). |
