Alexandra Hugman

Director, UniServe Science

Alex completed a BSc in Physics followed by a Post Graduate Certificate in Education at Kingston upon Hull University, England. She taught Physics and Mathematics to 'A' Level at public high schools until a move to Manchester involved a position at Bury College of Further Education teaching BTEC Electronic Engineering and the City and Guild Certificate in Teaching. Interested in the changes in access to education, Alex studied for a Diploma in Flexible Learning at Manchester University whilst setting up Access Courses for mature students. Observing the lack of female students in the Physics and Engineering Departments she designed an 'Electronics for Women' programme, fuelling a research MSc in Education Management at Manchester University.

Since arriving in Australia in 1995, in Western Australia Alex lectured part-time on the Electronic Engineering programme at Edith Cowan University and acted as IT consultant at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School.. Moving to Perth led to the position of Deputy Principal for Curriculum at Armadale Christian College, and the relocation to Sydney in 2001 led to the position of Science Coordinator at Ravenswood School. Alex is currently studying for a Doctorate in Science Education through Curtin University of Technology in WA.

Her research interests include the many aspects teaching and learning of Physics in schools, the integration of Science throughout the NSW Stage 4/5 curriculum, and gender issues for students studying Physics and Engineering.
