The Apple Scholarship was awarded to Sydney College of the Arts for the purchase of a Streaming Server. The server was purchased for use in curriculum development in audio-visual streaming for the Web. This was to give students the opportunity to develop creative works in areas such as film, audio and digital video for QuickTime-based integration into a streamed web environment.
The project began with academic and IT staff testing and evaluating the quality of film, video and audio files for streaming. This has also involved the resolution of issues such as file compression and encoding for the best results using files of different sizes. From this process a range of files have been tested internally with good results. All files have been compressed at a data rate of 300 kilobytes. Testing has also taken place externally using an Optus Cable Internet connection with similar positive results. We have found that audio streaming is most suitable for 56K dialup users.
Further testing has also taken place using embedded web links in audio visual files intended for use in authoring for DVD. Further development of the curriculum component of the project was delayed in 2003 pending a review and subsequent redesign of the SCA website. This work is now complete and it is intended for the first student works from third year undergraduate and Master of Multimedia Design postgraduate coursework to be streamed from the site in August-September of this year.
