Extending Music Composition with GarageBand

Project description

GarageBand is placed as the entry-level music sequencing utility in the Apple iLife suite. Its ease of use and relative simplicity in being able to obtain quite good results in a short time frame are two of the most impressive features of the application.

This project seeks to use these characteristics of GarageBand as a means of extending the compostional skills of the operator of the software. There are many people, inlcuding those in educational contexts, who have basic technical ability to create msuic but who would benefit tremendously from having access to explnanations of further compositional techniques - thereby allowing them to create potentially more interesting music. This project seeks to enable such an extension through a series of web-based and audio materials.

Educational Relevance

As GarageBand is now emerging as the standard entry-level music sequencer (due largely to it being bundled with every new Mac) it is being rapidly adopted by both secondary and tertiary education sectors as an integral teaching tool. This project will provide some contexts for using GarageBand as a tool to more general music learning, rather than being a means unto itself. The current loop-based structures of GarageBand can imply particular types of music, such as electronic dance music. This project will enable GarageBand users to realise thatthere are significantly more extensive musical possibilities inherent in the software.

Promoting ICT in Education

This project will have the capacity to extend existing Macintosh solutions in the creative education field. By further integrating GarageBand into the general musical curriculum, it will become an increasingly valuable tool for educators, thereby reinforcing the importance of the macintosh in this area.
