What's different about lab teaching? Semester 1 2008
  • practical skills
  • set procedures
  • occupational health and safety
  • noisy, large classes
  • explained clearly in order
  • longer, at least 3 hours, a series of tasks, end point
  • gaps in experiments
  • finish early, organised
  • chain of command
  • who is responsible
  • familiar with equipment
  • results
What's different about lab teaching? Semester 2 2007
  • practical skills
  • set procedures
  • occupational health and safety
  • noisy, large classes
  • explained clearly in order
  • longer, at least 3 hours, a series of tasks, end point
  • gaps in experiments
  • finish early, organised
  • chain of command
  • who is responsible
  • familiar with equipment
  • results
What's different about lab teaching? Semester 1 2007
  • Lab safety - Occupational Health and Safety issues
  • Equipment - know how it works, model technical skills, know when to call for technical help
  • time constraints - specific tasks need to get done at a certain time, being productive during gaps
  • students may want to leave early, plan and organise to finish in a timely manner
  • need to deal with unexpected results
  • as there is assessment of labs, need to cover all topics and material
  • divide up tasks but ensure that all students develop all skills
Dealing with unexpected results
  • start from beginning, find out why the unexpected results occurred
  • go back over the process, how did the unexpected results occur - operator error, problems with equipment
  • if lab carried out properly and still unexpected results - further research
  • repeat critical steps
  • involve whole group
  • report the unexpected results to someone
What's different about lab teaching? Semester 2 2006
  • Demonstrate practical skills
  • Equipment
  • Safety in labs
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Different rates of finishing lab
  • Different experiments - know material - understand them
  • Experiments don't always work
  • Longer time - enthusiastic for the whole time
  • Signing off work while keeping everyone occupied -> management
  • Preparation
What's different about lab teaching? Semester 2 2004
  • Finish experiment in fixed time
  • Occupational Health and Safety issues
  • Awareness
  • Repititious
  • Equipment
  • Different tasks
  • Follow on problems - if early errors
  • Practical - developing procedures
What's different about lab teaching? Semester 1 2004
  • Safety issues
  • Autonomy - organising, being independent
  • not as much freedom to plan lesson
  • multitasking
  • hands-on equipment
  • larger numbers, increased noise, increased activity
  • more diverse activity
  • keeping track of all students
  • key questions
  • getting students to prepare for the lab sessions e.g. using quizzes
  • show by example - be prepared
