Tutor and Demonstrator Development Program Sample Trigger

Management of Small Group Teaching and Learning

Sample TriggerI know my Assignment 1 looks like Jamie's. We always work together, but we did the assignment independently.
Turor's response"Well, my reply would depend on number of common errors between two assignments. If there are obvious commonalities (mistake wise) between two assignments, my reply would be something like this: Telepathy is a very useful skill, however you guys should remember that you are going to sit an exam at the end of the term. I'd appreciate you to make every possible effort to study the material rather than share mistakes."
Mentor's feedback"I agree that the first step here is to determine whether the similarity is due to coincidence or plagiarism, and I also agree that common errors is a useful way of distinguishing between these in Maths. As for the rest of your response, I think that a more serious and direct response would be more appropriate. If you concluded that this was a case of copying/plagiarism, then it is important that they be made aware of how seriously the University takes such matters. Students also need to understand that assignments are not merely a form of assessment, they also provide useful feedback on progress, and in cheating students deprive themselves of the opportunity to get some feedback on their strengths and weaknesses. It would probably also be appropriate to refer such a case to someone with more authority, such as the lecturer in charge, rather than trying to deal with it yourself."
Response from tutor on this feedback"Thank you very much for your comments! I found them very constructive and thought motivating."
