Real case scenario faced by one tutor last year
The course I am tutoring is offered in both semesters. It is the second semester and a fair proportion of the students in my class are repeating students who may find the material boring and think that they know it all. How can I convince or encourage them to come?

Responses

Data base is not only understanding the concept but also involves a lot of practicing. This could be explained to those students that either there entire concept is wrong or they didn't do enough practice last semester because of which they ended up failing. Moreover every semester the material for the tutorials change. This would create a sense of confidence in them that by practicing I will definitely pass this time. What' good is that because they are already familiar with all the concepts it wont take them time to do the tutorial activities and so they can finish way before time and leave. Finishing work on time and encouragement from Tutor will motivate them even more.

I would recommend that the tutor advise that no doubt the course is repetitive, the students would perhaps gain another perspective as to what is being taught and I would encourage them to make an effort to reflect upon what is being revised.
