IDRISI

Product Name: IDRISI
Level: Second Year Tertiary / Third Year Tertiary / Post-grad
Platform: PC - DOS / Windows®
Supplied Information: IDRISI is designed to be easy to use, yet provide professional-level GIS, Image Processing and Spatial Statistics analytical capability on Windows-based personal computers. It is intended to be affordable to all levels of users, and to run on the most basic of common computer platforms. No expensive graphics cards or peripheral devices are required to make full use of the analytical power of the system. IDRISI for DOS is a remarkably inexpensive PC-based package with many advanced features including good import/export capabilities, a digitizing module (TOSCA), and some image processing capabilities. Very good for educational purposes. The software is modular in design with strong support for the manipulation and display of raster images. Display of imagery is affected by a limited colour palette, however this shortcoming has been addressed in the most recent release which provides support for 8-bit display for certain SVGA cards. Manipulation and import of vector data is also supported. Documentation is very good and includes a tutorial. IDRISI for Windows has recently been released and is currently available as a separate licensed software item from the previous versions. This version of IDRISI has resolved previous problems of limited display depth by running under Windows and using the Windows drivers thereby allowing it to support 8-bit and 24-bit display. There is also improved support for vector, attribute, and map projection manipulation. In terms of GIS capabilities, Idrisi for Windows is now competing directly with the likes of MapInfo and Atlas GIS.
Possible Use: This product is suitable for Second Year Tertiary / Third Year Tertiary / Post-grad courses for use by students in laboratory classes.
Price: US $495.00 Academic, $247.50 (student, $125.00 (Student Tutorial Version, $2,475.00 (Site License - 10 )
