Review: Saunders Interactive General Chemistry CD-ROM is a multimedia software package for teaching-learning General Chemistry. It has all the features one would expect in a multimedia package ótext, video, animation and audio. One concern about the audio feature is that non-native speakers of English may find that the narrator is speaking too fast. However, such users can be guided to stop, pause and replay whenever they fail to understand the commentary. The text and commentary are clear and concise and the video and animation features enlighten and enliven the teaching and learning of General chemistry. The problems presented throughout the chapters have been devised to sharpen the users' skills in observing, interpreting data and drawing conclusions. The user can access a problem related to a particular topic in the course of learning that topic, instead of after a time lapse. The inclusion of an audio explanation of how the solution was arrived at will help to improve problem solving capabilities. These are obviously very useful features. In addition, there are questions in the workbook (which accompanies the CD-ROM) with further exercises and study questions. The notepad is a very useful option not only for problem solving but also for note-taking. Other useful features include accessing definitions to underlined words, accessing charts and tables related to the current topic being presented on the screen. Accessing a related topic and also accessing the following interactive tools: the periodic table of elements; molecular weight calculator; and molarity calculator. The videos and notes on the scientists and also on the environment add piquancy to the lessons and relate chemistry to real life. This CD-ROM is based on "Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity" By J.C. Kotz and P.M. Treichel. The CD-ROM is self-contained and complete and can be used instead of the textbook. However, the textbook in AdobeTM AcrobatTM PDF format can be accessed on the CD-ROM provided the Adobe Acrobat Reader software has been installed. Saunders Interactive General Chemistry CD-ROM is a very attractive and effective software package. It converts learning, General Chemistry from being a dull chore into a delightful adventure.
