Ethical Perspective
Ethical Perspective involves the awareness of the social and interpersonal implications of your actions, including the impact of scientific and technological development on society and the environment. It requires knowledge of your legal and moral obligations to your personal and professional community, including an understanding of the ethical standards of your profession. An ethical perspective requires the Background Perspectives of sensitivity to another person's feelings, awareness and respect for their views and practices, and empathy with their position.

Professional Scientific Perspective
Professional Scientific Perspective is concerned with your role as a science-literate member of society, and as a professional in a science-related field. This perspective involves an appreciation of the impact of science on society and the environment. It requires the Background Perspectives of awareness of sustainable practices, cultural diversity and professional ethics, and a responsibility to behave according to professional standards.

Personal Perspective
Personal Perspective involves a sense of your personal identity and your role in a larger group, including the attitudes, beliefs and sensitivities held by you and by others. It requires the Background Perspectives of awareness of your individuality and role in society, sensitivity and empathy for others, and responsibility for your own actions.

Responsibility is:

  • An ability to be answerable for your own behaviour and decisions.
  • An ability to take personal accountability for a course of action, guided by your own knowledge, imagination and ethical principles.
  • An ability to act independently of guidance.

Sensitivity and Empathy is:

  • Being receptive to the attitudes, feelings and circumstances of others.
  • Identifying with and understanding another person's situation, feelings, and motives.
  • A compassionate awareness of the suffering or difficulties of another.

Awareness is:

  • Social - an awareness of social interactions, values, ideals, customs and beliefs that affect interpersonal interactions
  • Cultural - knowledge of other cultures and times, an appreciation of cultural diversity
  • Global - an awareness of the broader context of your personal life and professional work. An ability to work in a culturally diverse environment, with consideration for the viewpoints of individuals, and local, national and international communities.
  • Historical - an awareness of past events that help you to understand present experiences
  • Interdisciplinary - awareness of the different groups involved in an activity and an ability to work with many different groups to achieve something of common value
  • Political - being aware of the nature of leadership, decision making and your role within the political systems of society. Knowledge of governmental and social issues, including those directly relevant to your professional work.
  • Economic - an awareness of financial issues, both in your own personal and professional life and in society at large. An ability to make build economic considerations into your planning and decisions.
  • Legal - knowledge of your legal rights and obligations, and commitment to uphold your responsibilities to yourself and others. An awareness of legal issues within your discipline of work.
