On Christmas Day 1974 Cyclone Tracy hit the city of Darwin with winds of over 200 kilometres per hour and dumping 195 mm of rain on the city. Darwin was devastated with over 60 people killed and 9,000 homes destroyed. It was the worst natural disasters to hit Australia in recorded history.
