Institutions to go to for help:

Royal Botanic Gardens - Mrs Macquaries Road, Sydney. The Gardens Advisory Service operates 9am to 4pm five days per week. It has people available to answer any enquiries about identification, distribution, toxicity of weeds and general horticulture. Their number is (02) 9231 8000. You can front up to the Gardens, 'phone or write. Take or post enough sample to enable identification. Just a few leaves is not enough to identify a plant.

Department of Agriculture - Biological and Chemical Research Institute, Victoria Road (corner of Pembroke Street) Rydalmere, 'phone (02) 9683 9777. They should be able to identify any insect or plant. Their advisory line (1800 808 095) might be able to help you over the phone but it is located at 299 George Street, Windsor so the RBG is probably closer for most people identifying plants.

NSW Fisheries - Head Office 1st Floor, Sydney Fish Markets, Gipps Street Pyrmont, (02) 9566 7807 or (02) 9566 7866. Fisheries Research Institute, 202 Nicholson Parade Cronulla, (02) 9527 8411. Both places will identify "anything marine" for you.

Australian Museum - College Street, Sydney, (02) 9320 6000. The Museum is happy to answer questions from the public about the identity of plants and/or animals. It also has a library that is open 10am to 4pm each weekday.

Sydney Water - Community Education and Information Unit is available for consultation. They have a Publication called "World Habitat Day" prepared by Gary Schoer of Envirosense. It includes a section on "Birdscaping your School Grounds".
