Symposium on Blended Learning

'Blended learning' is a term that has come to mean 'appropriate
combinations of face-to-face and technology-mediated learning'.
Peter will address the practical question of how best to help teachers
in higher education identify and integrate appropriate combinations
of learning activity, with and without technology support. He draws
on research from the fields of student learning, ergonomics, architecture,
teachers' thinking and educational design to identify some likely
candidate solutions. His presentation will offer a perspective on
educational design as a real-world activity and will introduce 'design
patterns' as ways of capturing and sharing educational design experience.
Peter Goodyear is Professor of Education at The University of Sydney.
He has previously held the position of Professor of Educational
Research in the Centre for Studies in Advanced Learning Technology,
Lancaster University, UK. He has been carrying out research and
running advanced courses in the area of ICT and learning since 1980.

Abstracts for presentations
and posters have now closed.
All abstracts will be reviewed in June and notification of acceptance
as either a poster or paper presentation will be given in June. Selection
for full papers to be presented orally will be based on evidence of
completed research into science teaching and learning with
research methodology and results. Papers which align with the theme
of the symposium will be favoured, but papers on wider topics will
also be accepted. An aim is also to reflect the diversity of disciplines
and universities being showcased at the symposium.
Authors who contribute an abstract that is accepted as a full paper
will be requested to submit the full paper for peer review to meet
the DEST Category E1 guidelines, and then for publication in a Proceedings
to be ready at the start of the Symposium.Authors who are selected
to submit a poster, will be given the opportunity, if they so choose,
to contribute a short paper which will be peer reviewed, provided
it also meets the DEST Category E1 requirements.

This year, due to the requests from 2004 participants we will be
allocating an afternoon on the day before the First Year Experience
Forum for discipline groups to meet autonomously. It is likely that
there will be a discipline group for Physics, Biology, Chemistry,
Psychology and Geosciences, meeting on the Wednesday afternoon before
the conference. UniServe Science will be providing the meeting rooms
and light refreshments but the meeting will essentially be run by
the participants. It is hoped these meetings will inspire new collaborations,
networks and ideas. There is no charge for attending a discipline
meeting however we ask that if you are planning to attend that you
complete and send in the registration form below.
First Year Experience Forum
This year's theme: Assessment
9.15am - 5.00pm Thursday 29th September
Research shows that assessment drives the learning process. The need
to provide suitable formative assessment opportunities that will encourage
students to adopt deep learning approaches has a currency that is
rarely out of date. This year's forum will explore the ways in which
we use formative assessment to encourage student learning. If you
are interested in presenting your ideas and approaches at this forum,
please let us know so that we can develop a stimulating agenda for
the day.
Don't miss your chance to be involved in discussing the issues and
solutions around the best teaching practices in assessment. There
will be breakout groups, presentations and debates throughout the
day.
