UniServe*Science "Computers and Assessment" Workshop

Friday 14th February 1997,

University of Sydney

To register your interest please complete this form or email PhySciCH@mail.usyd.edu.au

Workshop theme:

This workshop is designed to explore the issues surrounding computer based assessment (CBA). We want it to address those questions which are common to all the sciences which include: the logistics and problems involved with setting up CBA systems; the effectiveness of CBA as a teaching tool; how students respond to CBA and the intellectual appropriateness of this approach. The speakers for the workshop sessions will be individuals who have used computer based assessment in their departments.

Cost:

There will be a fee of $50 to go towards the costs of the day. However, we (again) recognise that the cost of travel may deter some from coming who might benefit from attending, and therefore UniServe*Science will pay part of the travel expenses for some participants from outside NSW (one per department, as we did for the last workshop).

Workshop sessions and mini-posters:

For this workshop, we are looking for people who have familiarity with CBA systems that are used in formal teaching, to run 90 minute, hands-on workshops. Computer facilities adequate for 20-30 participants at a time will be available. If you would like to run one of these, please let us know.

At the same time, we are also looking for people who are using CBA in a less extensive capacity who would like others to know of their work, but do not wish to run a full scale workshop. We propose to have facilities for the display of mini-posters (just pin-boards, no computers). We will not be having a formal poster session, but they will be on display all day to be discussed over the tea and lunch breaks.

Accomodation:

Although the workshop only lasts for one day, some of you may want to come the previous day, or leave the following day - or perhaps stay over until Sunday to take advantage of the cheaper airfares. Arrangements have been made so that you can book accommodation at Wesley College, for any or all of 13, 14 and 15 February. Ring Yvonne Hamilton on (02) 9565 3377. Bed and Breakfast is $40. For those who prefer hotel style accommodation call the University Motor Inn, which is only minutes away from campus, on 1800 263 909.

Post-workshop dinner:

To finish off the day, we will book tables at a local restaurant for anyone who would like to attend (details to be finalised). Since the dinner will be pre-booked, participants will be asked to pay in advance. The cost will be $20-30. Please indicate your interest.

Note that travel support is against airfares only. We suggest that if you are in further need of support to allow you to attend you might apply to your faculty.
